Historical note

The Library Staff Association was created in the summer of 1968, as a result of a survey that was sent to Iowa State University’s library staff earlier in the spring. The organization’s official name is the ISU-LSA, and it is a non-profit social organization which promotes and enhances the well-being of Iowa State library staff.

Originally limited to library staff employees, the association currently allows faculty, professional and scientific, merit, administration, student employees and retired Iowa State library staff to become members.

The association consists of an executive council with one selected representative from major divisional areas, with an officer of the association ineligible to serve as a representative. The four standing committees consist of: Communication, Education, Social and Art. The executive Council appoints ad hoc committees when necessary.

ISU-LSA commends employee service, and both members and non-members are recognized through: the Triennial Service Award, Student Appreciation Teas, and Retirement Teas.

Other activities include Out-Of-Library Experiences (trips out of town for a day or overnight), community activities (donating items for the disadvantaged), and social activities (book discussions). As a part of the social activities, several times throughout the year the association sponsors food events, including an ice cream social, held in the fall, a Christmas potluck, retirement teas and student appreciation receptions. All activities are on a voluntary basis.

Collection Description

This collection (1967-[ongoing]) contains the Library Staff Association’s general meeting minutes, executive council meeting minutes, constitution and bylaws, and mission statements. It also includes flyers, memos, correspondence, questionnaires and membership lists. The collection contains photographs, including a scrapbook, which chronicle various events that the Library Staff Association organized. A highlight of the collection is the semi-annual holiday cookbooks with recipes submitted by members.
