The Iowa
State chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), has
increased its size, sphere of activity, and value to its members
and the public. They have over 185 members at Iowa State (1992
figure), who strive to satisfy the following objectives: To
inform young women, their families, counselors, and the general
public of the achievements of women engineers and the
opportunities open the them; To assist women engineers in
preparing themselves for a return to active work after temporary
retirement; To serve as a center of information on women in
engineering; And to encourage women engineers to attain high
levels of education and professional achievement (see Box 1,
Folder 1, Background information). Many SWE-sponsored
scholarships are offered to women upon entering Iowa State to
help achieve these goals. The organization meets weekly to
discuss topics of interest and plan educational trips to high
schools. Moreover, members attend national SWE conventions and
take field trips to engineering firms to learn more about
careers in the field. |

This collection includes background
information including mission statements and other material that
is important in understanding the function of SWE; financial
statements; correspondence which contains letters written by
officers to society members, in addition to correspondence the
organization received from companies; scholarship information
such as applications and standards regarding some of the
scholarships that SWE offers to its members; agendas and minutes
from local meetings; and membership lists.
There are also publications containing
newsletters and resume books produced by the ISU chapter of SWE
and records documenting the activities of the chapter, including
programs from the group’s annual spring banquet, materials from
trips that members make in order to educate high school students
about engineering opportunities (for both men and women,
excursions to plants, such as the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation,
and conference trips.
The photographs include pictures of SWE
members in the early 1980s at national conventions in Oakland,
California and New York City.
