Biographical note

Albert A. Klingebiel was born on October 1, 1910, on a farm two miles southwest of Hinton, Iowa. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agronomy in 1936 and a Master of Science Degree in Soil Microbiology in 1937 from Iowa State. His career began in the USDA Forest Service prior to acceptance of a position as Soil Scientist with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) in 1938. He was placed in charge of training new professional employees in eight midwestern states in 1940, and, in 1946, was selected as the SCS State Soil Scientist for Illinois. In 1952, the USDA Agricultural Research Service appointed him Director of Soil and Water Management Research in Illinois. In 1954, he became Assistant Director and, in 1956, Director of Soil Survey Interpretations for the SCS in Washington, D.C., serving at this post until retirement from the SCS in 1973.

Besides the many contributions of Mr. Klingebiel in the use of soil survey interpretations in comprehensive land-use planning while with SCS, he has authored more than 50 scientific articles and has contributed to several books on soils and soil interpretations. He was also an active member of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) and served in various positions with the organization including SSSA representative to the American Institute of Planners and the American Society of Planning Officials. Since 1973, Mr. Klingebiel has done consulting work for numerous agencies and organizations worldwide on the use of satellite imagery to determine soil potential for the production of food and fiber crops.
 

 

Collection description

This collection includes the following series: Personal Materials, Professional Materials, Speeches, Publications, Training and Workshops, International Projects, and Photographs and Slides.

The Personal Materials series contains biographical information, an autobiography - The Story of My Life, materials documenting awards and honors Dr. Klingebiel received during his career, and personal correspondence.

Professional materials is comprized of mainly correspondence, both general correspondence and specific correspondence with professional organizations, institutions, and publishers. Also included is a diary of his Sudan Research Project (1977), research files for Beaver Brook Road Area (1965-66), Value and Use of Soil
Survey (1962-77), and lecture notes used in Agronomy 307 (1960).

Dr. Klingebiel's speeches (n.d.,1943-90) document his involvement in soil surveys and the use of the surveys for professional soil scientists and the general public.

The Publications series (n.d.,1937-91) contains the writings of Dr. Klingebiel. He wrote about soil conditions: specifically; resources, silting, revegetation, fertilizer residue issues, management, quality, surveys, and survey interpretation. He also wrote about land use planning, nutrient enrichment in natural waters, and remote satellite sensing.

The series titled Training and Workshops contains materials that document the Soil Land Analysis Project (SLAP) Workshops (1982-86), Remote Sensing Institute Workshop in Khartoum (1979), and National Soil Interpretations and Database Workshop (1990-91) in which Dr. Klingebiel participated. Also included is a Training Handbook for Junior Soil Scientists (1943) and a Manual used at the La Croosse Training Course for New Technical Employees of the the Soil Conservation Service (1946).

Dr. Klingebiel's International Projects included work on Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and South America. The series contains comments, notes, field notes, maps, mapping materials, and reports.

The Photographs and Slides in this collection document the work of Dr. Klingebiel. The subject areas include soil mapping and interpretation, Soil Landscape Analysis Project (SLAP), soil types, and soil damage.
