Biographical note

Frank Champion Murphy grew up in Brownsville, Texas. He began drawing the livestock on the Champion ranch. Mr. Murphy attended Iowa State University and obtained a B.S. (1943) in economics and journalism. He then joined the Navy and was discharged in 1945. After serving his country, he decided to pursue a career in advertising illustration. He attended illustration courses at two Chicago commercial art schools and worked as an apprentice under the GI Bill. While an apprentice, Mr. Murphy was able to do some freelance work, and his first account was with the Quaker Oats Company in their Ful-O-Pep Feeds Division.

Later, Mr. Murphy collaborated with Harry Barger, Ful-O-Pep account executive, and Lloyd Miller of the American Aberdeen–Angus Association, to promote the Angus breed in America. This team produced advertising and promotional material for over 25 years and were an important factor in the increased popularity of the Angus breed. Over the years, Mr. Murphy pursued freelance work and created many posters, magazine and newspaper advertisements, and brochures for a variety of corporate clients and magazine publishers, primarily in the agribusiness field. He has served as the Official Artist of the American Angus Association for over 50 years.
