 Biographical note

 
Lorris A. Foster Foster, originally from Detroit, Michigan, attended Iowa State College (University) as a Child Development major, from 1944 until 1947.  Her freshman year, she lived in Roberts Hall. She joined the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and was also active in the Collegiate Presbyterian Church.  

Foster married James Foster, a 1946 Civil Engineering major, also at Iowa State College (University).  

 Collection description

 
Foster’s scrapbook includes photographs, dance cards, correspondence, social and athletic programs, church-related items, nametags, wedding invitations, news clippings, and other materials that represent the life of a typical female student at Iowa State College in the 1940s. The scrapbook includes letters from the college concerning Foster’s placement in residence halls, as well as rules and regulations for female students at that time. Also included is correspondence from various sororities, providing a good understanding of the rush process.  Foster also kept a copy of the house rules from Alpha Gamma Delta, as well as souvenirs from her sorority sisters’ “Five Pound Parties,” a party to celebrate their recent engagements. In addition, the materials in the scrapbook include wartime concerns of the students and the college, including letters from the college mentioning ration books, and that the female students had find new accommodations in order to make room for a V-12 Navy unit.   

Foster assembled the scrapbook in September 2002.
