Historical note
The Iowa State University Alumni Band Association was formed in 1981. According to the by-laws of the organization, "the Alumni Band Association is a project of the Iowa State University Band Alumni, the Iowa State University Music Department, and the Iowa State University Alumni Association that is conducted for the health, welfare, and enjoyment of its members and the Iowa State University Band Program. Membership in the Alumni Band Association is open to all alumni of Iowa State Bands. Individuals do not have to have graduated from Iowa State University to be eligible. Spouses, friends, relatives, and children of the members are welcome at all association activities. The governing body of the Association is the Executive Board. The Executive Board consists of all officers elected by the Association, the Iowa State University Band Directors and a staff representative from the Iowa State University Alumni Association."

Kirk Hartung, a 1979 Graduate of Iowa State University, proposed the formation of the Iowa State University Alumni Band Association in late September 1980. He discussed the idea with Mr. James McKinney, Mr. Joseph Christensen, and Mr. Dan Phillips, Directors of the Iowa State University Marching Band. The following week, with the support of the Iowa State University Marching Band Directors, Hartung wrote to the Iowa State University Alumni Association to request a list of past marching band members with the intention of forming an Alumni Band Association. The first meeting and performance of the group took place on Homecoming weekend, October 16-17, 1981. The band performed at the Homecoming football game halftime. The group consisted of 165 members from the classes of 1927 to 1981. On May 4, 1990 the Alumni Band first participated as a unit the Veishea Parade. On January 11, 1992 they first performed as the Alumni Basketball Pep Band at an Iowa State University men’s basketball game, and on December 19, 1999 the band added it’s first women’s basketball game to its schedule.

 

Collection Description
The records document the activities of the ISU Alumni Band Association and contain biographical information concerning members, fundraising efforts for instruments and uniforms, and press releases and news clippings. Also included are schedules for events at football games and VEISHEA, newsletters, and rosters of participants. Of special interest are files relating to Association awards and its webpage.
