Historical note

During the winter of 1897, Mrs. Olive Curtiss and Mrs. Alice McKay invited wives of faculty who lived on the campus to spend Wednesday afternoons together. Bringing their children and their sewing, they would meet in each other's homes; one member would read aloud to the group while the others sewed. The women with their workbags, striding along the snowy paths, reminded someone of a well‑known painting of Priscilla Alden walking through the woods and "Priscilla" became the name of this club of thirteen women. By 1916, the club's membership had risen to over 200, its scope had broadened, and its organization had become formal. The name was changed to "Faculty Women's Club of Iowa State College". In 1997, the club was again renamed the Iowa State University Women’s Club in an effort to extend the membership to include all women in the Iowa State community.

In 1913, the Faculty Women's Club established an awards program for Iowa State's female students. In 1933 as part of its philanthropic program, the club started a community thrift shop. Income from sales is used primarily for welfare programs in Ames and the local community. The club features 18 divisions appealing to the diverse interests of its members. The General Assemblies present programs of general content for all members. Through the years, featured events have been the Priscilla Picnic; receptions for mothers of new students, for unmarried faculty, for student wives, for women faculty and for new faculty; a faculty follies; a hobby show; a Christmas party for children; and a faculty dinner.

Collection description

The collection consists of materials relating to the business operations of the club, the various divisions and committees within the club. The records include newspaper clippings, treasurer reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, flyers, and reports. Also included in the collection is the ISU Women’s Club history, “Keepsakes” (1997).
