Historical note

In 1907 Theodore Roosevelt appointed the Country Life Commission to study the conditions of living on the farm. He hoped this group's work would slow the "flight from the farm" by improving farm life. As a result of the findings of this commission the extension movement was developed during the early 1900's to help bring greater prosperity to farm people, reduce the drudgery of farm work, and increase the rewards of country living.

The first extension activity in Iowa occurred in 1903 in Sioux County when farmers, acting on a challenge from Iowa State College agronomist Perry Holden, created a plot where agricultural experiments could be conducted. In 1906 the Iowa General Assembly appropriated funds to create a Department of Extension at Iowa State College. The National Cooperative Extension Program was a result of the Smith-Lever Act passed in 1914, which brought together the federal government, the states, and participating county governments as partners in a three-tiered organization to serve the nation's farm population.

University Extension was established on March 1, 1966, by the merger of the short courses service group, farm demonstrations service group, engineering extension service group, and the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS).

University Extension activities extend useful, practical, problem-solving information to the people of Iowa. Faculty in departments and colleges working with extension staff in Iowa counties use consultations, meetings, newsletters, publications, and various other media in helping extension program participants.
