Biographical note


Charles Murray was born in Greenfield, Ohio on February 8, 1876.  His family moved to Russell, Iowa, when he was a young child.  Murray received a Bachelor of Pedagogy from Drake University (1906), a Bachelor of Science from Iowa State (1910), and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State (1912).

Charles Murray was the Superintendent of Lucas, Iowa and Tingley, Iowa High Schools (1896 -1908). He worked for Iowa State College as an Instructor of Bacteriology (1908 to 1912) and an Associate Professor in Veterinary Pathology as a Bacteriologist (1912 to 1914).  In 1914, Murray became the head of the Department of Veterinary Research.  He served as Professor and Head of the Veterinary Research Institute from 1916-1943.  In 1936, Dr. Murray was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Hygiene and Dean of the Veterinary Division.  He served Iowa State in this capacity until his administrative retirement in 1943.  In 1948, Dr. Murray was named Dean Emeritus.  Soon after, he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he resided until his death on January 21, 1962.                   

Dr. Murray was an active member of the Iowa State Veterinary Association, the American Veterinary  Medicine Association, the Osborn Research Club, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Zeta, and Gamma Sigma Delta.  His research interests included: enteritis of swine, brucellosis, and avian leukosis complex.

This collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, publications, and class notebooks compiled during Dr. Murray’s undergraduate study at Iowa State College (University).
