In 1965, Iowa
State University began offering M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in
computer science through the collaboration between the
Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Electrical
Engineering. In
1967, an undergraduate degree program in computer science was
offered. The
Department of Computer Science was officially established in
1969.
The
Department of Computer Science has research programs in
several key areas of computer science including algorithms,
artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and computational
biology, computational complexity, parallel and distributed
computing, programming languages, software engineering, and
theory of computation. The department also participates in
interdepartmental programs such as Bioinformatics and
Computational Biology, Complex Adaptive Systems, and
Neuroscience.
As
of 2003, the Department of Computer Science had approximately
18 full time tenure track faculty and several adjunct faculty
and instructors. The
department also had 40 resident Ph. D. students, 60 M. S.
students, and approximately 750 undergraduate students.
