Historical note

Ellis Ingham Fulmer was born on April 12, 1891, at Gibbon, Nebraska. He received his B.A. (1912) from Nebraska Wesleyan University, his M.A. (1913) from the University of Nebraska and his Ph.D. (1919) from the University of Toronto in physical chemistry.

He joined the staff at Iowa State College (University) as Assistant Professor (1919) in the Department of Chemistry. He quickly became Associate Professor (1920) and Professor (1923). He was named Assistant to the Director of the Institute for Atomic Research in 1947. Students under Dr. Fulmer’s direction received twelve M.S. degrees and thirty Ph.D. degrees during his tenure. He published over 200 research papers either independently or in collaboration with these students.

His main areas of research were in colloid chemistry and the separation of rare earths by ion exchange. He also contributed research to the field of fermentation chemistry and the physiology and metabolism of microorganisms, focusing principally on yeast.

Dr. Fulmer was associated with several professional organizations and received recognition for his research. He was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi Sigma, and Sigma Xi. He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fellow of the New York Academy of Science, and member of the American Society of Naturalists. He was listed in American Men of Science and Who’s Who in America as well as other biographical lists.

Dr. Fulmer married Ruth Emma Files on June 15, 1915. Together they had two sons: Norman Clark and Robert Ellery. Dr. Fulmer died on February 10, 1953, in Ames, Iowa.

Collection description

The collection (1921-1953) contains biographical information, news clippings, and research papers documenting Dr. Fulmer’s career at Iowa State College (University). The research papers cover primarily the first decade of his work at Iowa State with only a handful of papers dating from the 1930s and 1940s. These papers present research conducted by Dr. Fulmer with the majority of them related to his research of microorganisms and yeast in particular.
