Biographical note

Kathleen M. Desmond Trahanovsky was born 19 September 1939 in Lowell, Massachusetts.  She received her A.B. (1960) in Chemistry from Emmanuel College in Boston and her M.S. (1962) and Ph.D (1969) in Organic Chemistry from Iowa State University.  Her M.S. thesis was “Relative Reactivities of Some Hydrocarbons in Reactions with N-Bromosuccinimide” and her Ph.D thesis was “Electron Spin Resonance Studies of Some o-Naphthosemiquinones and Cyclic Unsaturated Semidones.”  Since 1960, Trahanovsky has been teaching in the Iowa State University Chemistry Dept. and is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor.

 

Trahanovsky is a member of several professional organizations including the American Chemical Society, Iota Sigma Pi, the Association for Women in Science, and Sigma Xi.  Within the American Chemical Society she has been extremely active with the Women Chemists Committee serving as Chair, 1989-1991 and on numerous committees.

 

Collection description

This collection (1942-1990) contains correspondence, surveys, reports, newsletters, agendas, and printed materials regarding Trahanovsky’s work at Iowa State University. The papers also include materials regarding her involvement with the American Chemical Society and Iota Sigma Pi.

description:

This series contains materials related to the American Chemical Society, including publications, programs, reports, handbooks, agendas, and notes. Trahanovsky was involved with several committees, including the Committee on Economic Status and the Subcommittee on Employment. The work of these committees as well as their compiled information concerning their respective subjects makes up part of this series. The remainder of the series pertains to Trahanovsky’s work as Chair and as a member of committees, with the Women Chemists Committee. There are agendas, minutes, and correspondence and a large number of printed articles and brochures documenting other scientific organizations and the status of women as well as records about the employment of women in chemistry, the Lilly Awards, and the Garvan Medal, Chemistry’s top honor for women.
