Biographical note

Arthur L. Bakke was born in Horace, South Dakota on June 26, 1886. In 1893 he moved with his family to Forest City, Iowa where he graduated from high school. He then enrolled in Iowa State College and received a B.S. degree in 1909 and a M.S. in 1911. In 1917 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. As a plant physiologist and instructor, Dr. Bakke spent two years, 1909 and 1910, at Elgin Academy (Illinois). From there he went to Iowa State as an instructor and became a full professor in 1925. He spent the remainder of his career at Iowa State.

Bakke devoted his professional energies to weed control. He made significant contributions to weed control in Iowa with his studies in root reserves in perennial weeds, notably European bind weed and leafy surge, and with his early work with sodium chlorate and Atlacide. In 1944 Bakke was helpful in the organization of the North Central Weed Control Conference, and served as the organization’s Research Committee Chairman as well as in other capacities. In 1954 he was elected honorary member of the organization. Bakke was also active in the development of the American Society of Plant Physiologists. He died on December 25, 1972 in Ames, Iowa and is buried in the Iowa State University Cemetery.

Collection description

The Arthur L. Bakke Papers include biographical information, clippings, ISU committee files, correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts, manuscripts translated from Danish, Iowa State University committee papers, experiment station bulletins, and photographs. The personal material includes Bakke's B.S. and M.S. diplomas from Iowa State and his Ph.D. diploma received from the University of Chicago. The largest part of the collection is Bakke's personal and professional correspondence. Included are letters from the Ames Land Company; C. E. Brindley, an economics professor who was a partner in a land venture and eventually owed Bakke money; Iowa State University librarian Charles Brown; R. E. Buchanan, Hahn Muscatine Company, a gravel firm in which Bakke invested, the Osborn Research Club, Louis H. Pammel, Raymond A. Pearson, H. S. Smith related to the experiment station at Hawarden (1936 1940), E. W. Stanton, and genealogy from the Studt family, his mother's family. Other correspondents include C. R. Ball, S. A. Beach, E. A. Bessy, R. K. Bliss, John M. Coulter, Charles F. Curtiss, Henry Gilman, R. B. Hibbard, Harold D. Hughes, L. W. Kephart, Burton E. Livingston, Irving E. Melhus, Raymond J. Pool, S. C. Salmon,Charles H. Schull, William Trelease, and R. B. Wylie.

The correspondence files contain agricultural advice and information related to the effects of artificial light on crops (1919), European Bindweed and other weeds, and related to the early use of 2 4 D. Included are Bakke’s publications related to the transpiring power of plants, soil nutrients, weed control, and small grains. There are also drafts of his research and unpublished material including a "Report of the Winneshiek Drainage Project," a plan by the U.S. War Dept. to drain Mississippi River bottom lands. The brochures are related to scientific equipment available from many manufacturing corporations of the day. Notebooks for work at Hawarden and other projects include financial books kept by Bakke and colleagues. The notebooks include Hawarden notes and expenses for 1935 1944. The ISU committee files relate to the Fraternity Committee (1921 26), the Short Course Committee, and the State Fair Committee (1920 27).
