Biographical note

Dr. Richard W. Pohl (1916-1993) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Marquette University in 1939 and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947. Pohl joined the ISU faculty in 1947 and served as an Assistant Professor of Botany from 1947-51, as an Associate Professor of Botany from 1951-56 and as a Professor of Botany from 1956 until his retirement on June 30, 1986. He was Curator of the Herbarium from 1950-86. Pohl was named a Distinguished Professor in 1975 and served as a Professor Emeritus from his retirement until his death in 1993.

He specialized in the study of bamboo and grasses; spending considerable time in Central America, especially Costa Rica, studying the taxonomy and cytology of tropical American grasses. He was regarded as the ranking expert in the area of Central American grass taxonomy and served as the honorary curator of grasses for the National Museum in Costa Rica. The courses he taught focused on elementary plant taxonomy, field botany, agrostology and plant geography. He was the author of numerous scientific articles and was a research associate for both the Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois.
Pohl was a member of the Botanical Society of America, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists, Sigma Xi, science research honorary; Gamma Sigma Delta, honor society of agriculture; Phi Sigma, biology recognition society; Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic honorary; and Phi Zeta. He served as president of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists in 1973, as treasurer from 1959-65, and as a member of the council from 1965-72.

Richard W. Pohl died in Ames, Iowa, on September 3, 1993, several months after suffering a severe stroke.

Collection description

This collection contains Laffoon's professional correspondence with fellow entomologists, former students, and regarding his work in the Entomological Society of America. Collection also includes research notes, principally on mosquito ecology, publications of Laffoon and other authors, as well as course and lecture notes, and copies of grant applications. Also contains material related to systematic zoology and the International Congress of Entomology.

Organization

The Pohl papers personal and correspondence section contains biographical materials (1932-87), and correspondence (1953-91), as well as subject files on foundations and organizations (1951-90), individuals (1948-90), and travel to Costa Rica (1945-1992). The Teaching and related materials section contains class materials, lecture notes, handbooks, and keys (1952-86). Also included in this section are report materials from the Organization for Tropical Studies (n.d.). The research and related materials section is comprised of National Science Foundation materials (1963-87), publications, (1940-92), symposia and lectures (1973-82), and a miscellaneous subject file (1940-91).
