Biographical note

George Oscar Hendrickson was born to Robert W. and Maria Hendrickson on May 25, 1890, in Earlville, Iowa.  Dr. Hendrickson received his B.A. (1921) from Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) and his M.S. (1926) and Ph.D. (1929) from Iowa State College (University).

Dr. Hendrickson joined the faculty at Iowa State as Instructor (1925-1930) in the Department of Zoology and Entomology.  He was promoted to Assistant Professor (1930-1945), Associate Professor (1945-1951), and Professor (1951-1961).  He served as Assistant Leader (1935-1961) of the Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

Dr. Hendrickson’s research focused on animal ecology and wildlife management in Iowa.  He wrote over 200 articles for publication in scientific journals and co-authored several nature study and biology books including several editions of College Biology (call no. QH308 W459).  He received several awards for his work as a wildlife conservationist and was honored at a recognition dinner in Washington, D.C. for his work with the Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

There were numerous scientific and professional organizations that benefited from Dr. Hendrickson’s involvement.  He was a member and President (1933-1934) of the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union, Vice President (1942-1943) of the Wildlife Society and Assistant Editor (1942-1948) of their Journal of Wildlife Management, Director (1948-1950) of the American Nature Study Society, and Chairman (1954-1959) of the Iowa Academy of Science’s Conservation Committee.

George O. Hendrickson married Irena B. Simpson in 1916.  Together they had five children: Jean, Ruth, Mary, Carol, and Robert Thomas.  Dr. Hendrickson died on March 19, 1961.

 

 

Collection description


The collection (1925-1970, n.d.) consists of biographical information, research articles, and correspondence.  The biographical information consists of news clippings, faculty information forms, vitae, memorials, and lists of publications.  The research articles document his work in animal ecology and wildlife management, primarily focusing on fowl, insects, and cottontail rabbits in Iowa.  The correspondence consists mostly of letters sent by Dr. Hendrickson to colleagues and in response to Iowa residents seeking information on wildlife resources and management.
