Arnold Otto Haugen (1910-2002) was born to Ole Andreas Pederson Haugen and Karen Petrine Talhaug Haugen on May 11, 1910, in Decorah, Iowa. He received his B.A. (1936) from Washington State College (University) and his M.S. (1939) and Ph.D. (1941) from the University of Michigan. He served a number of years in Michigan as a game area manager, wildlife biologist, and game extension specialist and Associate Professor of Zoology at Michigan State University. Before joining the faculty at Iowa State, Dr. Haugen served as a Professor of Zoology (1949-1957) and Leader of the Alabama Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Auburn University. He joined the staff at Iowa State University as Collaborator (1957) on the Graduate Faculty and Leader (1957-1973) of the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit. He was promoted to Professor (1958-1973) of Zoology and Entomology. Dr. Haugen received numerous awards for his work in conservation and recreation. He received the Governor's Award as Iowa's Conservationist of the Year (1965) and was elected Fellow (1966) of the American Park and Recreation Society. He served on numerous committees including the Iowa Governor's Committee on Conservation of Outdoor Resources, the Iowa Academy of Science, and the National Field Archery Association. Dr Haugen published well over 100 research articles related to wildlife and natural resource management. He also authored numerous works on archery and bowhunting, including the book Field Archery and Bowhunting (call no. SK36 H39), written in 1963 in collaboration with Harlan G. Metcalf. He married Vneda Maxine Johnson on September 18, 1934, and they had 4 children: Arnold, Sallie, Sonja, and Chris. Dr. Haugen passed away on July 4, 2002. |
