Historical note

Music courses were first offered at Iowa State Agricultural College in 1869.  The Department of Music was formally established in 1870.  An early reference to the Iowa State University marching band appears in the Aurora in 1881, it states that “the marching band is attempting to re-organize.”  A reference in the I.A.C. Student, (Volume 1, Number 10; April 10, 1891) notes that “the members were hoping for uniforms” and received them in 1891.  Recent marching bands (since 1984) have performed at most Iowa State University home football games, and occasionally at post-season bowl games.
