Biographical note

Leonard Feinberg was born August 26, 1914, in Russia, and immigrated with his mother to the United States in 1923.  He received a B.S. (1937), an M.A. (1938), and a Ph.D. (1946) in English from the University of Illinois. Dr. Feinberg began his teaching career as an instructor (1938-1943) at the University of Illinois. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy as a Lieutenant (1943-1945). Dr. Feinberg joined the Iowa State College (University) faculty as Assistant Professor (1946-1950), and was promoted to Associate Professor (1950-1957), and Professor (1957-1975). Dr. Feinberg became Distinguished Professor of English (1975-1981) and received a faculty citation (1976) from the ISU Alumni Association. His main area of research included satire and humor. Dr. Feinberg retired in 1981 and currently lives in San Diego, California. He published a novel, Where the Williwaw Blows, in 2003. Dr. Feinberg died February 26, 2006.

Lilian Okner Feinberg was born January 28, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois. She received an A.B. (1940) in English from the University of Illinois, and an M.S. (1967) in Journalism and Mass Communications from Iowa State University. She also took additional work at the University of Denver (1948) and the University of Michigan (1963). She began her career as resident investigator (market researcher) (1939-1940) for J. Walter Thompson. She then worked for Goldblatt Bros. Department Store as an advertising and direct mail copywriter (1936-1938), and as a reporter (1941-1943) at the Champaign-Urbana Courier in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. She became publicity director and copywriter (1943) for R. H. White Department Store, Boston. Professor Feinberg worked as an assistant (1944-1946) in the English department at the University of Illinois. She was a drama director (1950-1957) for the City of Ames Recreation Program.  Professor Feinberg joined the Iowa State College (University) faculty as an instructor (1952-1967) in the Department of English, and was promoted to Assistant Professor (1967-1975) and Associate Professor (1975-1981). Her research interests included national and international business communication. She received a faculty citation in 1978 from the ISU Alumni Association. Professor Feinberg wrote Applied Business Communications (1982). She retired in 1981, and died September 21, 1998 in San Diego, California.

Leonard and Lilian Feinberg were married in Chicago, Illinois in 1938. They had two children, Thomas and Ellen.

 

Collection description

The collection (1935-2006, n.d.) contains the papers of Leonard and Lilian Feinberg. The collection consists mostly of Dr. Leonard Feinberg’s research and writings including Introduction to Satire (1967), Asian Laughter (1971), The Secret of Humor (1978), and Satire – It’s Nature and Method. A highlight of the collection are Dr. Feinberg’s research notes of international examples of satire and humor, ranging from primitive and ancient to modern cultures. The papers also include Lilian’s research project on communication and placement of Iowa State University students for employment (map case), writings on her and Leonard’s travels and business communication, and opinion pieces in the Ames Tribune.
