Biographical note


Elizabeth “Betsy” Hoffman (1946- ) was born on November 12, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (1968) from Smith College, a Master of Arts degree in History (1969) from the University of Pennsylvania, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History (1972) from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Economics (1979) from the California Institute of Technology. Hoffman was enrolled in the George Mason Law School, Law and Economics Center: Law Institute for Economists (1989).

Dr. Hoffman was employed as an Assistant Professor of History (1974-1976) at the University of Florida, as an Assistant Professor of Economics (1978-1981) at Northwestern University, and at Purdue University as an Assistant Professor of Economics (1981-1983) and as an Associate Professor of Economics (1983-1986). She was employed as a Professor of Economics (1986-1988) at the University of Wyoming and as a Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona (1988-1993). Hoffman served as the Associate Dean and Master of Business Administration Program Director (1989-1993) for the Karl Eller Graduate School of Management at the University of Arizona; and as a Professor of Law (1992-1993) at the University of Arizona. She served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Professor of Economics (1993-1997) at Iowa State University. Hoffman left Iowa State University in 1997 to accept employment at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Hoffman was a member of the Ames Noon Rotary Club, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, Story County/National Women’s Political Caucus, and the League of Women Voters of Ames (Iowa).

 

 

Collection description


The collection contains six series: Series 1 - Biographical Information, 1993-2005, contains Elizabeth Hoffman’s vita, and news clippings documenting her professional career at Iowa State University. Series 2 - Publications, 1980-1995, contains publications written by Elizabeth Hoffman. Series 3 - Research Materials, 1861-1976, contains Costa Rican census material including birth and death rates, population studies, disease outbreaks, and health status data in graphs, charts, maps and printed materials. Series 4 - Dissertation prospectus, correspondence, research, and notes, 1870-1972, contains Hoffman’s prospectus for a dissertation and correspondence, research, and notes for her dissertation. Series 5 - Teaching/Class Materials, 1974-1991, contains course outlines, course packets, exams, lecture notes, lecture notes - library use copies, a personnel handbook, a schedule of classes, collegiate student papers, and grade books for classes taught by Elizabeth Hoffman at Northwestern University, Purdue University, The University of Arizona, The University of Florida, The University of Pennsylvania, and The University of Wyoming. Series 6 - Reference Files, 1964-1991, contains papers, publications, theses, and typescripts of lectures used for reference purposes by Elizabeth Hoffman.

This collection is organized into six series: Series 1 - Biographical Information, 1993-2005; Series 2 - Publications, 1980-1995; Series 3 - Research Materials, 1861-1976; Series 4 - Dissertation prospectus, correspondence, research, and notes, 1870-1972; Series 5 - Teaching/Class Materials, 1974-1991; and Series 6 -  Reference Files, 1964-1991.  Series 1 and Series 2 are arranged in chronological order.  Series 3 and Series 4 are arranged as placed by Elizabeth Hoffman.  Series 5 is arranged by class number with the grade books and collegiate student papers at the end of the series in box 10.  Series 6 is arranged in alphabetical order by last name of each Reference File’s author.
