Celia Elizabeth "Betsy" Hoffman was born on November 12, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (1968) from Smith College, a Master of Arts Degree in History (1969) from the University of Pennsylvania, a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History (1972) from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Economics (1979) from the California Institute of Technology. Hoffman was enrolled in the George Mason Law School, Law and Economics Center: Law Institute for Economists (1989). Hoffman was employed as an Assistant Professor of History (1974-1976) at the University of Florida, as an Assistant Professor of Economics (1978-1981) at Northwestern University, and at Purdue University as an Assistant Professor of Economics (1981-1983) and as an Associate Professor of Economics (1983-1986). She was employed as a Professor of Economics (1986-1988) at the University of Wyoming and as a Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona (1988-1993). Hoffman served as the Associate Dean and Master of Business Administration Program Director (1989-1993) for the Karl Eller Graduate School of Management at the University of Arizona; and as a Professor of Law (1992-1993) at the University of Arizona. She served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Professor of Economics (1993-1997) at Iowa State University. Hoffman left Iowa State University to become Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (1997-2000) at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was then named President (2000-2005) of the University of Colorado System. Hoffman returned to Iowa State University and currently (as of 2010) serves as Executive Vice President and Provost. Dr. Hoffman was a member of the Ames Noon Rotary Club, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, Story County/National Women's Political Caucus, and the League of Women Voters of Ames (Iowa). |
The collection contains Elizabeth Hoffman's vita, and news clippings documenting her professional career at Iowa State University, publications written by Elizabeth Hoffman, and Costa Rican census material including birth and death rates, population studies, disease outbreaks, and health status data in graphs, charts, maps and printed materials. It also contains Hoffman's prospectus for a dissertation and correspondence, research, and notes for her dissertation and course outlines, course packets, exams, lecture notes, lecture notes - library use copies, a personnel handbook, a schedule of classes, collegiate student papers, and grade books for classes taught by Elizabeth Hoffman at Northwestern University, Purdue University, The University of Arizona, The University of Florida, The University of Pennsylvania, and The University of Wyoming. Also included are papers, publications, theses, and typescripts of lectures used for reference purposes by Elizabeth Hoffman. The majority of these papers are related to her career prior to leaving her position as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University. And additional collection, consisting primarily of newspaper clippings, documents her return to Iowa State as Executive Vice President and Provost (see collection RS 3/1/17). The collection also contains materials that were passed down from her grandfather, Andrew Kalpaschnikoff, including his memoirs and two photograph albums. The memoirs, in early draft from, tell the story of Kalpaschnikoff as he grew up in Imperial Russia's upper class, was educated in France, and employed by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador to the United States. He joined the Russian Army during World War I and was named Director of the Russian Red Cross during the war. He was later captured and jailed by the Communists after the revolution, escaped from prison, and returned to the United States. In his colorful telling he encounters a host of interesting people including Czar Nicholas II and his family; Prince Mikhail Ivanovich Khilkoff, who started construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad; ballerina Anna Pavlova; Leon Trotsky; Marie of Edinburgh, Queen of Romania; as well as U.S. and French presidents and dignitaries. Kalpaschnikoff also wrote the book A Prisoner of Trotsky's (1920); a later print is available in the Special Collection Department (call no. DK265.7 K25 2009x). The two photograph albums contain pictures of Kalpaschnikoff and Russian soldiers during the war. The images include shots of some of the battleground sites, wounded soldiers, and Red Cross stations. A digital copy of Kalpaschnikoff's two scrapbooks (scrapbook one, scrapbook two) are available for viewing. (If the page doesn't load after a few seconds, refresh your browser window.) |
