Biographical note

Alyce Fanslow was born on February 28, 1935. She received a B.S. (1957) in Home Economics Education from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. (1960) in Household Equipment and a Ph.D. (1966) in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University.

Dr. Fanslow began her career as a home economics teacher (1957-1958) at Owatonna (Minnesota) High School. She accepted a position at Iowa State University as an instructor (1960-1961) in the Department of Home Management. She was promoted to Assistant Professor (1966-1973) in the Department of Home Economics Education, Associate Professor (1973-1979), and Professor (1979-1995). In addition, Dr. Fanslow was designated the Mary B. Welch Distinguished Professor (1982) and Professor Emeritus (1995). She was also a visiting professor (1989) with the Graduate Institute of Home Economics Education at National Taiwan Normal University, and Co-Managing Editor of the Journal of Vocational Home Economics Education.

In 1984, Dr. Fanslow was recognized as one of "75 Leaders" in home economics at the 75th Meeting of the American Home Economics Association.  She also taught the first Masters of Family and Consumer Science course (FCEDS 511/TC 511 – Research Methods) to be taught on the Iowa fiber optics network (ICN) in 1994.

Dr. Fanslow married Glen E. Fanslow and they had two daughters: Kathryn Marie, and Janet Lynn.  She currently resides in Ames, Iowa.

 

Collection description

This collection (1965-1997, n.d.) contains biographical information, audio cassettes, computer software, slides, reports, journals, published and unpublished papers, class notes, and award materials.  Many of the materials in the collection reflect Dr. Fanslow’s interest in children’s nutrition, family and consumer sciences education, and household financial management.

A game (“What I Eat”) developed by Dr. Fanslow is housed in the University Archives Artifact Collection.  The game was designed to encourage children to choose nutritious foods.
