Biographical note

Hester Chadderdon was born April 15, 1899, in Stockville, Nebraska. She received a B. S. (1924) from University of Nebraska, an M. A. (1928) from University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. (1938) from the Ohio State University. She was an elementary teacher (1918-1919) in Herman, Nebraska and a high school teacher (1922-1923 and 1924-1927) in Lincoln, Nebraska. She also worked as an instructor (1928) at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Chadderdon joined the Iowa State College (University) faculty as an Assistant Professor (1929), and was promoted to Associate Professor (1938-1943) and Professor (1943-1969) in home economics education. Dr. Chadderdon researched predicting teaching success of home economic graduates and measuring the abilities of high school home economic students involving learning. She developed devices for evaluating the effectiveness of home economic programs. She was involved in several committees on campus, including the Graduate Faculty Membership Committee and the University Student Conduct Committee. She belonged to several national organizations, including the American Home Economics Association. She received the Faculty Citation from the Iowa State University Alumni Association in 1959 and the Mary B. Welch Distinguished Professor Award in 1963. Dr. Chadderdon retired and became Professor Emeritus in 1969. She died June 7, 1990.

Collection description

This collection (1924-1990, n. d.) contains biographical information, the dissertation completed by Dr. Chadderdon, papers and reports. The child development and housing testing packets (ca. 1959-1961), prepared by Dr. Chadderdon, evaluated how students in ninth and tenth grades developed their inter-personal skills and how their abilities affected their learning highlights the collection. A plaque Dr. Chadderdon received from the Iowa State University Mary B. Welch Distinguished Professorship in Home Economics is housed in the University Archives Artifact Collection.
