Biographical note
|
|
Pilar Angeles Garcia was born
on November 4, 1926 in Manila, the Philippines, where her
father, Gaudencio Garcia, served as a professor of
international and political law, and her mother, Maria Paz
Angeles Garcia, a high school biology teacher. She is the
second oldest of ten children and dreamed of coming to the
United States ever since childhood. That dream became a
reality after she graduated from the University of the
Philippines at Manila, in 1949, with a B.S. in pharmacy. It
was there that she earne d the prestigious Barbour
Scholarship, which sent her to the University of Michigan.
One year later she earned the Master of Science degree in
botany. She relocated to lowa State University, where she
completed her studies in nutrition. Upon earning the M .S.
and Ph.D., in 1952 and 1955 respectively, Garcia immediately
served as Research Associate in the Department of Food and
Nutrition.
In 1957, Garcia became an
assistant professor. She was promoted to professor status in
1974. Throughout her academic ca reer, Garcia has spent her
time researching and teaching courses about the effects of
nutrition on people, primarily women. In 1978, she took a
six-month faculty leave at the University of the Philippines
at Los Banos College, Laguna, in order to conduct research
on nutritional conditions of the rural, elderly poor. She
earned a faculty citation from the lowa State Alumni
Association in 1970 and won the Amoco Outstanding Teacher of
the Year Award in 1986. Garcia has participated in a number
of civic and university activities. Unfortunately, she kept
none of these records. |

Collection description
|
|
This
collection (1933-1993) primarily documents Garcia's career
as an instructor; however, much of her research-related
work, in the form of journal articles, is included. As a
professor, Garcia excelled in the classroom, as evidenced by
her teaching awards and class evaluations. Also important is
the enthusiasm with which she served lowa State and the Ames
community. Garcia devoted a great deal of her time to Greek
honoraries, university committees, and civic functions. In
most cases, though, this collection deals w ith her
professional career. |
