Historical note
The Home Management Houses at Iowa State developed from a proposal in 1916 by Home Economics Department Dean, Catharine MacKay. She proposed that a laboratory be established where students could experience life as a homemaker. The Board of Education accepted her proposal and in 1916, first house (Practice House) was rented by the university at 1208 Kellogg in Ames. Senior students lived in the house for 2 week intervals paying $8.00 for room and board. The students rotated jobs at the house so all would be provided experiences in the tasks of running a household. Increased enrollment, the distance of the house from campus, and the requirements of the Smith-Hughes Act necessitated more and better facilities. Plans were made for an on-campus unit of houses. In 1919, the Knapp house located across from the Knoll was purchased and remodeled. In 1920, the Knapp house opened as the first practice house on campus. The introduction of babies to the Home Management Houses occurred in 1924. Until 1948, babies were secured from child welfare agencies to be tended by the students in the Home Management Houses. |
Collection description
The collection (1916-1960, undated) contains several scrapbooks, which include photographs of the women who lived in the homes, as well as photos of the babies being cared for. Recollections of the time spent in the homes and information regarding the progress of the children can be found as well in the scrapbooks. Also included are practice house accounts, newspaper clippings, list of resident advisors, and correspondence. |
