Biographical note
Joan E. Herwig, B.S. (1965) University of Wisconsin-Stout in Home Economics Education; M.S. (1971) Iowa State University in Child Development; Ph.D. (1978) Purdue University in Child Development.

Herwig has been employed by the Department of Child Development at Iowa State University as an Instructor 1971-1978, as an Assistant Professor 1978-1982, and as an Associate Professor since 1982. She served as Child Development Chairperson from 1983-1986, and has served as Director of the Child Development Laboratory School since 1993. Dr. Herwig's major field of research is the play of young children in the context of the learning environment both indoors and outdoors; influences of kindergarten, preschools and public school programs; and effects of teaching strategies on young children's learning.

 

Collection description
Collection contains biographical information including a curriculum vita and clippings, publications in the Child Development subject area, and records of the Midwest Association for the Education of Young Children (MAEYC). The MAEYC records contain procedural and historical notebooks compiled by Herwig during the time she served on the executive committee for the organization 1981-1993; and the MAEYC Council Members Handbook edition 1, 1990 and MAEYC Council Members Handbook edition 2, 1991.
