Charles T. Wright was born on November 9,1941 in Carbondale,
Illinois. He
earned his B.A (1963) in mathematics and his M.S. (1964) in
physics from
Southern Illinois University.
He received his PhD (1970) in Computer Science from
Iowa State University, one of the first PhD degrees awarded at
Iowa State in Computer Science.
Wright was appointed to the position of Assistant Professor of
Computer Science and Senior Systems Analyst (1970-1979) in the
Ames Laboratory. He
was promoted to Associate Professor (1979-1984) of Computer
Science; Associate Professor (1984-1992) in Iowa State’s
newly created Computer Engineering Department; Professor
(1992-2000) of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and
University Professor (1999-2000).
Wright’s research emphasis was computer architecture and
design. During
the 1960s and 1970s, he worked on the Symbol Computer project,
which was a program sponsored by the National Science
Foundation. The
project made a significant contribution to modem computer
architecture and design methodology.
In addition to his research, Wright also focused on
undergraduate education.
He was named ‘Outstanding Computer Engineering
Professor’ three times, and received numerous other awards
for his efforts. In
addition, Wright designed a program, “Toying with Technology”,
that introduces high school and middle school students to
computer engineering.
