Biographical note

Janice A. Beran was born in Leighton, Iowa in 1931. She graduated from Pella High School (1949) and earned her B.A. (1953) from Central College in Pella, Iowa and her M.S. (1970) from Drake University in Physical Education. She also earned a Certificate from Gymnastikhochskolen, Ollerup, Denmark. She received her Ph.D. (1976) from Iowa State University in Education (Major) and Technology and Social Change in Developing Countries (Minor). Dr. Beran began her professional career as an instructor (1953-1954) at Welch Junior High School in Ames, Iowa. She was an instructor (1960-1969) and then promoted to Assistant Professor (1970-1973) at Siliman University. Dr. Beran joined the faculty as instructor (1974-1977) at Iowa State University and was promoted to Assistant Professor (1975-1977), Associate Professor (1977-1986), Professor (1986-1992), and Emeritus Professor (1992).

Dr. Beran was a Fulbright Exchange Professor (1980) at Ahmadu Bellow University, Zaria Nigeria; and an Exchange Professor (1983) at National Taiwan Normal University, Republic of China.

Dr. Beran received the Iowa State University Alumni Association Faculty Citation in 1992. Dr. Beran is involved in several professional organizations including American Association on Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAPERD), and is a past president of the Central District Association of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CDAPERD). Dr. Beran traveled to Nigeria, Philippines and Taiwan to teach and research Physical Education and wrote numerous papers on the history of physical education, including women’s basketball, and the effects of physical education in countries experiencing modernization.

Dr. Beran married George W. Beran, who is Professor Emeritus of the Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine department at Iowa State University. Dr. Beran currently lives in Ames, Iowa.
 

 

Collection description

 
This collection (1968-2004, n.d.) contains Dr. Beran’s biographical materials, certificates, presentation, papers and faculty activities correspondence relating to physical education on the international level, and the history of physical education.  A highlight of this collection is her several papers on the history of women’s basketball, and a presentation, “One Hundred Years of Physical Culture, Physical Training, Physical Education, Health and Human Performance at Iowa State University.”
